How to Build a Wind Turbine
Building a wind turbine power system not only brings major economic and environmental benefits, it can actually be a fun project. This article is intended to address some of the issues relating to building a wind turbine.
Wind turbines capture the power of the wind to generate free energy for your household, while also being surprisingly easy and inexpensive to build. It only takes about a weekend to assemble a turbine and start generating a lifetime’s worth of energy.
Putting together a wind turbine will take a few common components. A set of rotor blades, a rotor assembly, a mounting plate for the turbine, and a generator will all be necessary. The blades and the rotor need to be put together very carefully. It’s possible to purchase these components pre-made if you don’t feel up to the challenge of putting together blades that have the correct pitch and shape. There are many designs available online if you do go the route of building the blades yourself. At the moment, three-blade designs are the most widely used, as they offer a great combination of rotation and stability. Next, you’ll need a platform that can rotate in the wind, where the blades and rotor will be mounted. If you’re using a standard horizontal wind turbine, the blades will need to have the ability to orient themselves into the wind in order to generate power. For this reason, the platform needs to be able to rotate too. You’ll also need a vertical rudder, which is mounted on the rear of the platform, because of this. Once these parts are set up, the Wind Power generator can be added. Different generators come in different sizes, offer different levels of output, and produce different types of current. The majority output DC electricity, but there are generators available which output AC electricity as well. The generator needs to be attached to a shaft, which is rotated as the rotor assembly rotates. Most generators have one direction in which they can spin in order to produce power, so make sure that it matches the rotation of your rotor. Once the generator is mounted and joined to the rotor, you can place your new wind turbine in the best location available in terms of wind velocity and consistency. DC generators are able to be used to charge batteries and power some small appliances. To get AC power, you can simply connect the generator to an inverter.
