Washington, D.C. – Every first Thursday of the month a poetic buzz is felt on the historic U Street corridor as the The @ttic entertains lovers of poetry and young professionals alike. The monthly showcase features some of the best of local D.C. area poets, nationally renowned spoken word artists and Tony Award winners. Many of the artists have also had their talents displayed before millions on Russell Simmons: HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, BET’s Lyrical Café, and other major television outlets.
July 2008 will mark the one year anniversary of The @ttic. Founded by Beny Blaq Entertainment, LLC (BBE), the monthly event was seen as a way to highlight the art form and heighten the appreciation for it. Beny Blaq, CEO of BBE and a spoken word artist, comments “I wanted to do something different. There were plenty of open mic events in the city, but I didn’t find an event that recognized the local and national talent of spoken word on a professional level. While we still need the open mic events, I feel we also need the type of spoken word entertainment that The @ttic provides.”
The growth of the attendees and the venue size proves that the vision of The @ttic is coming true. In May 2008, BBE welcomed a partner company to co-produce the monthly event – Tim O. Productions, LLC. “This is a wonderful event and we share a similar vision of the potential for this type of entertainment. There is a certain buzz you can feel that increases with each event. We are very happy to be a part of taking this event to the next level,” noted Tim O., CEO and President of Tim O. Productions, LLC.
The combined forces of these two companies will continue to foster not just a place to have your ears entertained and mind expanded but, as the two CEO’s put it, “to create a club alternative for the mature professional to mix and mingle in an upscale environment.” Their goal is to keep the event true to the roots of the art form while attracting those not traditionally exposed to poetry events. The varied audiences who attend this monthly event are proof that there is indeed a market for what they envision. With confidence, they will tell you that once you experience The @ttic, you will love it.
The @ttic takes place at The Lounge at Station 9 every first Thursday of the month. Station 9 is located at 1438 U Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20009. Doors open at 7pm with a happy hour from 7pm – 8pm, followed by a show that begins at 8pm. Admission is free before 8pm and $10 thereafter. DJ Munch spins old school hip hop and R&B during the happy hour and after the show. For more information on this event please visit www.benyb-ent.com or www.writertimo.com.
